March Meeting

We had our monthly beekeepers meeting Thursday at 7:00 pm. We now have a new place to meet. It is at the Northeast Technology Center in Afton, OK. The NTC is a very nice facility and the room they let us use has a lot of space, tables and chairs.

We discussed a few topics about checking our hives this time of year, feeding them and treating them for foulbrood disease. We also talked about our concerns of new Oklahoma regulations affecting us selling honey. There are a few members looking into this and we hope to know more at the April meeting. The Ottawa County fair will be in August so we are starting to ask members to donate items for the beekeepers basket we sell tickets for to be given a way the last night of the fair. Speaking of the fair we have approved the the purchase of our new Green Country Beekeepers Banner.

Robert was out checking his bees and found that one of his hives had died. He brought the dead hive to the meeting for us to explore and diagnose why they had not survived the winter. The cluster looked to be very small and several of the bees had their heads in a cell. Robert and George said it looked like the hive starved to death. That the cluster was too small and would not move up to the super above them to get more honey.

We then moved on to snack time and had a drawing for door prizes. Shortly after that George closed the meeting.

I am thinking about starting a Frequently Asked Questions list on our site. I often get asked about bees and beekeeping. So I thought a FAQ list might be a good idea. If you have any FAQ's that you get asked or have questions or suggestions for the site send an email via the email address located on the side bar on the right side of this page or you can post them in the comments section below.

Do we need to change the location for your meeting on the Oklahoma State Beekeepers Association website?
